Which Infrared Sauna Is The Best?

As the torrent of portable infrared saunas sweeps across Europe and into the U.S. market, Americans are left wondering what to make of all the different infrared saunas. The information in this Buyer’s Guide To Infrared Saunas should help to separate the good from the bad.

There are several basic things to look for when investigating which portable infrared sauna to purchase. If you are going to have a positive infrared sauna experience there are some critical aspects to consider.

First there is the type of infrared heater. Most saunas advertised as far infrared actually use heaters with less than 50% of their emissions as far infrared, wile the rest emit medium infrared with smaller wavelengths that are damaging to the skin. With those saunas, you feel convection heat or heat only near the heater. Some so-called FIR saunas with flat carbon panel/sheet emitters actually only emit 5-10% far infrared! Various portable saunas and all dome saunas use this type of emitter, which also has a high output of unhealthy electromagnetic fields (EMF) because the wires have to be zig-zagged to cover the entire dome. Saunas with these types of heaters should be avoided.

Carbon-coated ceramic PTC (positive thermal coefficient) heaters are the most effective and efficient on the market. The ceramic aspect of the heater allows large amounts of FIR rays to be put out, while the carbon coating ensures that the heaters will have a farther range of effectiveness. This coupling of the ceramic and carbon benefits is ideal. The time it takes your portable sauna to heat up may sound immaterial, but the whole idea behind portable saunas is convenience and flexibility. Many portable infrared saunas take over five minutes just to warm up. For the best experience and most flexibility with your sauna, it is recommended that you find a sauna that heats up in about a minute’s time.

The majority of portable FIR saunas automatically shut off the infrared ray function in order to prevent overheating, only it can be hard to notice this function seeing as far infrared rays are not visible to the human eye. Always go with the portable saunas that continuously emit infrared rays.

Another possible problem you may come across when researching infrared saunas is the option to use a system with temperature controls. Many saunas have temperature controls that act as a thermostat and shut off the heaters when the specified temperature is reached. Although this sounds nice, it can lead to large portions of your infrared sauna session being void of infrared rays. Either find the saunas that do not have temperature controls, in which case you can slightly open your sauna to let some of the heat out without losing the infrared output, or find the more expensive sauna models with heaters that vary their voltage as needed to control the temperature while keeping infrared ray output loss at a minimum.

Portable infrared saunas differ in temperature range. The ideal temperature range to activate lymph and blood circulation is between 160F and 170F (70C to 80C.) Finding a sauna with the right temperature instead of the models that only offer around 115F (45C) can make all the difference in improving one’s health.

Look for the portable infrared sauna that is shaped like a big cube. The size and shape of your sauna will greatly effect just how usable it is. Don’t overlook the size of the machine. The cube-like shape is most versatile of all because it has the most space overall. Also the chair can be interchanged with one from you home if the one it comes with isn’t just what you are looking for.
